  February 2022 – So What’s It Called Now?

  Do you remember the roll down maps that hung over the blackboard or whiteboard to hide the pop quiz questions, a teacher might spring on the unsuspecting students as soon as the class began?

  A geography teacher might have a world globe sitting on their desk. The globe was likely tilted on its axis too.

  Atlases contained maps of the different continents. The countries on the continents would be named as well as maybe landforms like mountain ranges and bodies of water.

  You might learn the world’s countries and their geography. Depending when you were in Campbellford High School or Campbellford District High School, the country names might not be the same as someone who was older or is younger than you.

  Some examples with the oldest first are…

  • British Guiana, Guyana
  • Burma, Myanmar
  • Ceylon, Sri Lanka
  • Czechoslovakia, became Czech Republic and Slovakia
  • East Germany and West Germany, Germany
  • Madagascar, Malagasy Republic
  • Moldavia, Moldova
  • Siam, Thailand
  • [Countries of] Tanganyika and Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar,
    United Republic of Tanzania
  • Yugoslavia, broken up into Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo,
    Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia,
  • Zaire, Democratic Republic of the Congo
