An Apple for the Teacher
An apple is considered to be from the Tree of Knowledge.
“Bing Crosby’s 1939 “An Apple for the Teacher,” explains the persuasive allure of the fruit. “An apple for the teacher will always do the trick,” sings Crosby, “when you don’t know your lesson in arithmetic.””
In 1940, in the movie, Pinocchio saw Geppetto giving an apple to his little wooden son for his first day of school.
I should have brought a bushel of apples to give to my teachers, but I still doubt it would have helped me.
Et tu Brute
Thank you to all the English teachers who taught Shakespeare’s play, “Julius Caesar”. The first Latin words I heard in a class were “Et tu Brute?” from Act 3 Scene 1 of William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar.
Okay, I confess. I looked up which Act and Scene the words are spoken. I don’t remember everything from my high school days.
Our school motto, “Per vias rectus” is in Latin which means “By right ways”.
Latin was mandatory in Ontario high schools until it was discontinued in 1968.
