  The Clock is Ticking

  The hall is emptying and the clock is ticking. The lateness is making your fingers sweat. The combination of the lock is clouded in your mind among homework assignments, the
  new girl’s name in your class, where you are to meet your friends, what class is the next one and where is it in the school.

  Remembering the combo as we called it, we know the numbers, but is it three turns to the left or is it three turns to the right before setting it on the first number or some other number?

  Again, if you go too far past the first number, you need to begin again. You turn the combination dial in the opposite direction two times past the second number and then stop on the correct number.

  Hopefully, when you pull down on the lock’s shackle, it will open. If it doesn’t, start again and hope it works this time.

  Of course, most of us have accidentally left our combo lock opened on the locker. We didn’t check to see if it locked before leaving for class or at the end of the day. Sometimes,
  we accidentally told a friend our combo, only to find the lock upside down with the dial facing toward the locker the next time we went to the locker.

  The head and body contortions you had to do in order to read the lock and dial the combination weren’t enough. The audience of friends who seemed to appear out of nowhere to watch you didn’t help. But then again, you probably joined the crowd when someone else was in the same predicament.

  Oh, the trials and tribulations of combination locks. Such memories.
